I’ve always enjoyed the forms of the\u00a0 hills,\u00a0 they enabled me\u00a0 look at\u00a0 various\u00a0 horizons,\u00a0 perhaps it is a necessity derived from a \u00a0childhood \u00a0spent in these places.But\u00a0 when I was in the plains I struggled to orientate myself\u00a0 and just\u00a0 by observing the path of the river\u00a0 I could envisage spaces that were hidden\u00a0 from view , and then eventually\u00a0 with time even the plains became more ‘ spectacular ‘ but only occasionally. The need to reach a summit has been a constant desire for me , and so when I arrived\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to Maliosa and reached\u00a0\u00a0 Montecavallo\u00a0 I could enjoy the spectacular views\u00a0 ranging from the\u00a0 Tyrrhenian Sea ,the \u00a0Maremma , Saturnia, Amiata and Viterbo.<\/p>\n

I do not know how many times I came back to the summit and the snapshots that I took , almost all the same and yet\u00a0 so different . The\u00a0 farmland\u00a0 scenes\u00a0 more attractive to me, were\u00a0 the wooded areas\u00a0\u00a0 of dissimilar designs that\u00a0 cover a large part of the territory.<\/p>\n

This scene also led me to think about the forest in its primordial origin. The first land plants appeared about four hundred\u00a0 million years ago and their colonisation of the territories has continued\u00a0 producing more complex biological systems inside them. Since his\u00a0 emergence, man has always intervened to limit the plants, preventing them from taking over “his” agricultural land. The agriculture that we observe is still the result of the competition between\u00a0 man and the trees, our\u00a0 whole history illustrates\u00a0 this union, the forest is quintessential nature and the base of the preparatory ecosystem to cultivate. The vine is a liana which once shared a space in the forest attached to other trees. Some examples of \u201dVitis silvestris” attached to \u00a0trees are occasionally present in the Maremma especially near streams and also at La Maliosa, there are these ancient relics .<\/p>\n

Man has ‘ brought ‘ out of the wood these\u00a0 vines, selecting\u00a0 within the genus Vitis ,and\u00a0 above all was\u00a0 concerned about\u00a0 good and abundant fruit ; these \u201cTutor trees” have been replaced by structures with the same\u00a0 purpose of supporting the behavioural growth\u00a0 of liana.<\/p>\n

The vine begins \u00a0a long phase\u00a0 of shaping\u00a0 and pruning ( the vine\u00a0 does\u00a0 not heal its\u00a0 wounds , it was not designed to receive cuts ) that limits its viability to few decades .<\/p>\n

In most viticultures ,non communicating rectilinear rows are realised and plants are\u00a0 trained along supports : often the rows are realised\u00a0 according to the maximum slope of the terrain.<\/p>\n

At Maliosa new vineyards are being implemented on three separate areas distinguished by\u00a0 geology and topography.<\/p>\n

This choice is aimed at enhancing the scenic beauty , to valorise\u00a0 the historic vines, and to protect\u00a0 the value of the land, the harmony of plant architecture that maximises the physiology of the plant for best results. It is also an attempt to get closer to the bordering forest and re-establish a dialogue and an\u00a0 awareness that the forest is the matrix of agriculture.<\/p>\n
